September 23 could be one of the biggest days in India’s cricket history. If India emerges victorious in the 1st Test against Bangladesh on 23 or earlier, for the first time in their Test cricket history, they’ll have more wins than losses. It took Team India 20 years to get their first win in 1952 against England. Coincidentally, that historic victory occurred in Chennai, the venue for the India vs Bangladesh 1st test.

India cricket team’s win/loss record in Test cricket

Years Matches Won Lost Draw Tied Win % Loss %
1932-2024 579 178 178 222 1 30.74 30.74

It wasn’t till 1988 that India ended a single year with more wins than losses (3-1). In 2009, Team India won their 100th Test match. They’d played 432 matches by then and had a win percentage of just 23.14. That meant they weren’t winning one in four matches. In the next 15 years, Team India has won 78 of their 147 matches and has a win percentage of 53.06.

Before the 580th match (India vs Bangladesh 1st Test), India has an equal number of wins and losses. A victory in Chennai would take India to a positive record for the first time in history. They’ll also become the joint 4th team with most test victories. If Team India gets five more victories (assuming they beat Bangladesh in Chennai), they’ll become the 3rd most successful cricket team in Test history.
