The BCCI has been always vocal to prioritise domestic cricket. And now County cricket side Lancashire’s DEO Daniel Gidney has hailed the apex Indian board for their stance. Gidney has previously always been vical about how the agents of the English players have been in ditching County cricket for franchise leagues.

Gidney is of the opinion that the future of English County Cricket is greatly endangered with English players moving out to play franchise cricket all across the globe. On the other hand, the BCCI has always been adamant about their domestic. Save the few seniors in the team, all the players are required to take part in domestic cricket.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah are the few exceptions. However, the rest of the players do take part in Ranji Trophy or Duleep Trophy as per the requirement and schedule permits. In fact, the BCCI took stern steps to snub Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan from the central contracts this year after failing to play domestic cricket.

Lancashire CEO praises BCCI

“Imagine a governing body (BCCI) actually saying that out loud … That was fantastic prioritising,” Gidney told The Guardian.

“We need to have more of an open conversation. Coaches get blamed, administrators get blamed, but if you want to blame anybody, blame agents. I think the game as a whole needs to come together to find a way to support the championship. England players don’t have to play in the championship, agents don’t care about the championship,” Gidney added.

The Lancashire CEO believes that increasing the salary cap for the players can tempt the English players to continue playing County cricket. “More prize money would help and I think we need to find a way of paying four or five players a lot more money. Instead of GBP 80,000-90,000 being the top domestic salary, we need to find a way of paying GBP 200k … and saying part of that deal is that you don’t play franchise cricket,” he concluded.
