Five-time champions Mumbai Indians, who did not perform like champions last season and were under pressure, faced criticism as captain Hardik Pandya led a team that failed miserably. So, what lies ahead for them in IPL 2025? With the newly announced retention rules allowing franchises to retain up to six players under the 5+1 retention policy, how will MI approach their retention list this time? There is significant speculation regarding Rohit Sharma’s future, if MI does not retain him or if Rohit decides to leave the franchise, who are the first five players MI should target? Let’s see some top-quality names.

Players MI should retain ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction

Player Role
Jasprit Bumrah Bowler
Hardik Pandya All-rounder
Suryakumar Yadav Batter
Nehal Wadhera( Uncapped) Batter
Naman Dhir (Uncapped) Batter

Jasprit Bumrah

There is certainly no doubt that they will go for Jasprit Bumrah, as this pacer has been phenomenal, performing well at the highest stage. For the Mumbai Indians, he is an asset since every team wants a bowler like Bumrah, and MI has the real Jasprit Bumrah so why will they not retain him as they will think more than thrice before releasing. Speaking about his stats for MI, Bumrah has played 133 matches and taken 165 wickets. He is currently ruling the stage, and if MI wants to excel in the next IPL, they need to get Bumrah back in the mix first.

Hardik Pandya

The other name likely to be retained is Hardik Pandya, as MI is currently looking for more all-rounders. At the moment, they do not have many prominent names in this department, for now, Hardik is only one big name in the mix. They have Romario Shepherd, but relying solely on him is not a viable option. Also, since Hardik’s stint with MI was a disaster, he will be looking to redeem himself this time on a personal level, just as he did for the Indian team in the T20 World Cup 2024. Chances are surely high that MI could consider retaining him as well.

Suryakumar Yadav

Last but not least, India’s 360-degree batter, Suryakumar Yadav, should also be retained by MI. If we believe that we are unlikely to see Rohit Sharma at the top of the order, MI cannot afford to have too many batters going out. Having SKY in the mix strengthens MI’s batting setup, with 150 games and over 3,594 runs to his name.

Also apart from these established players, we may also see two uncapped names, Nehal Wadhera and Naman Dhir. They had impressive seasons in IPL 2024. If we just talk about Nehal Wadhera who earned the tag of “new-age Yuvraj Singh.” He showcased his potential by scoring 241 runs in his debut season in 2023, and we can expect him to perform similarly in IPL 2025 for MI.
