After the IPL 2025 retention list was revealed, everyone had one question: why was Shreyas Iyer not retained by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, despite being their champion captain in the previous season of the tournament?
KKR retained all six players, including Andre Russell (Rs. 12 crore), Sunil Narine (Rs. 12 crore), Rinku Singh (Rs. 13 crore), Varun Chakaravarthy (Rs. 12 crore), Harshit Rana (Rs. 4 crore), and Ramandeep Singh (Rs. 4 crore). However, Iyer’s name was not mentioned among these six players; he could not even return to the side through the Right to Match (RTM) card, as the franchise will go with zero RTM cards in the IPL 2025 mega auction. But what went wrong between Iyer and the KKR owner? Why was he not picked while KKR was willing to retain six players? Read this article to find out.
Why was Shreyas Iyer not retained by KKR?
KKR CEO Venky Mysore revealed that Iyer was the top name on the franchise’s retention list, but he wanted to chek his market value and did not wanted to get retained.
Mysore stated to RevSportz, “Shreyas Iyer was our number one choice for retention. However, the retention process is not solely dictated by the franchise. It also depends on the player’s desire to be retained and to continue with us. Naturally, Shreyas was at the top of our list because he was our captain, which is why we brought him on board in 2022.”

“However, there are often factors beyond our control. If a player wants to explore his market value, the auction provides an ideal platform for that, and we believe it’s fair to allow him the opportunity. This has always been KKR’s philosophy, as we support our players. Personally, I have a great relationship with Shreyas, but it’s important that he has the freedom to make his own choices,” Mysore added.
