The much-awaited Hockey India League (HIL) is set to make its comeback in December 2024, after a seven-year break. The league, which was last held in 2017, is set to return with a bigger format. This time, eight men’s teams and six women’s teams will compete in the prestigious tournament, with matches set to be held at two venues, Rourkela and Ranchi. Hokcye India President Dileep Tikey announced in a press conference on Friday. This is the first time the Women’s Hockey India League is introduced.

Men’s and Women’s Leagues to run side by side

The 2024 edition of the HIL will see both men’s and women’s leagues running simultaneously, a first in the history of the competition. This decision reflects Indian hockey’s progressive steps towards gender equality in sports, offering an equal platform for both male and female athletes.

FIH President Dilip Kumar Tirkey expressed his excitement about the league’s return, saying, “The Hockey India League returns after seven long years, bigger and better, with eight men’s teams and six women’s teams ready to showcase their talent. This isn’t just a league; it’s a platform where dreams take flight and the future of Indian hockey is shaped. The inclusion of men’s and women’s leagues side by side is a testament to our commitment to providing equal opportunities to all players.”

The 2024 season will feature several teams with backing from major corporate houses, ensuring strong support for the league. Here’s a list of the teams and their owners:

  • Chennai (Men’s team) – Future Gaming
  • Lucknow (Men’s team) – JK Cement
  • Delhi (Men’s and Women’s teams) – SG Sports
  • Kolkata (Men’s and Women’s teams) – Sharchi
  • Odisha (Men’s team) – Vedanta
  • Hyderabad (Men’s team) – Resolute Sports
  • Odisha (Women’s team) and Ranchi (Men’s team) – Novayan
  • Punjab (Men’s and Women’s teams) – JSW Sports

A platform for future hockey Stars

The Hockey India League, which began in 2013, played a key role in uplifting Indian hockey before it was put on hold in 2017. With its return, the league is expected to offer a platform for emerging hockey talent, giving young players the opportunity to shine on the big stage.
