An Australian Rules football umpire has been suspended for reportedly dressing up as late terrorist Osama bin Laden. The incident occurred in the end of the season function as Leigh Haussen made an “error of judgement” by dressing up as the leader of the terror group who was shot dead nearly a decade before. As a result of his actions, the umpire has been barred from officiating games in 2025.

The AFL bosses were pretty upset with Haussen’s choice of fashion and did not mince any words in criticising the official. However, it looks like they have accepted his apology as AFL’s head of umpires  Stephen McBurney said that Haussen has “reflected on his choice” and has “understood the inappropriate nature of his costume”.

I am sorry. I made an error of judgement. I never intended to offend anyone,” suspended umpire Haussen said in a statement.

This is not the first instance in the AFL when players or officials have been warned for crossing the line. A report states that six players from Greater Western Sydney faced a ban due to their participation in an event themed “controversial couples”.
